Adopt a Greek Stray & Make a Difference on Your Trip

Let’s talk about the cause that is closest to our heart!

Animals, and especially stray animals in Greece

You would usually see dogs and cats just laying down or strolling the streets in the extreme heat we get during the summer months looking for water, or in the cold weather looking for a place to warm up and avoid the heavy rain. These animals are an integral part of our landscape, in Greece!

Families and neighbors are trying to take care of and feed all strays around their area, but most importantly respect them and give them some love.

Around Greece at the moment, it is estimated that there are more than 1.8m stray dogs and over 2m stray cats. The sad truth is that the number only goes up. How many times while visiting Greece have you thought about taking one of those beautiful animals with you? Well, we cannot help every single stray animal, but we can always do something to help one.

Greek welfare organizations

Within the country today, there are about 120 animal welfare organizations that actively feed, neuter and care for cats and dogs, and are trying to adopt them into loving and caring families within Greece and worldwide! Almost all of these organizations are privately held and operate through donations and voluntary efforts.

If you would like to help such an organization please do so, by volunteering if you can or even donate money. You could also follow their journeys and efforts through social media. Here are a few of those organizations:

How to adopt a stray animal in Greece

You could also do this next step you have always been dreaming about (except visiting Greece!) and adopt a stray animal from Greece! If you are interested, it is a lot easier than you think. You could contact one of the welfare organizations above, or get in touch with us to give you more details. If none of the above work, here are some simple first tips to get your animal back with you:

  1. The animal must have received an electronic chip.
  2. The dog or cat must have received their vaccines – rabies. Please check as sometimes it may be needed a few weeks before traveling.
  3. The cat or dog must have a passport where all details like chip number and vaccinations are stated.

This process takes a few weeks, but you could have your animal traveling with you within 3 weeks, and you could give them the forever home they have been looking for in the streets!
